“The Simpsons” takes a trip into the world of Miyazaki’s whimsy

The town of Springfield and the world of Studio Ghibli reach common ground in an upcoming episode of the perennial show.

With twenty-five seasons under its belt, The Simpsons can’t always capture the magic it had in earlier seasons. But this teaser from an upcoming episode shows that the writers of the show still have a few tricks up their sleeves. After a couple of drinks too many, Homer Simpson finds himself in the world of Hayao Miyazaki’s imagination, and the people and places of Springfield have taken a turn to Studio Ghibli’s style of animation.

Of course, it wouldn’t be The Simpsons if there wasn’t a good amount of fun being made on both sides, and Miyazaki’s gentle sentimentality gets a sprinkling of irony. We’ll be looking forward to seeing just how Homer and his drinking buddy got themselves into this charming predicament. In the meantime, how many crossovers can you spot?
