The victim of an alleged rape in the Indian city of Kolkata has been taken to a hospital due to an overdose of prescription drugs after an apparent suicide attempt.

The 21-year-old Irish woman was expected to make a detailed statement to police on Saturday about the alleged assault but was found unconscious in her hotel room by a fellow Irish national who was staying at the same hotel.

“She had consumed a cocktail of sleeping pills, pain killers and other drugs,” said Sudeshna Lahiri, deputy director of the Calcutta Medical Research Institute.

“Though the drug overdose is still there, she is out danger,” Lahiri said, adding that she will be better in several days.

Police suspect the engineering student, who arrived in Kolkata for volunteer work, was depressed and tried to commit suicide days after filing a complaint accusing a 25-year-old Indian businessman of drugging and raping her in his home in the city. Authorities declined to make an official statement before the probe, according to Times of India.

“We can only ascertain her motive after interrogating her. But this can only be done after she comes back into consciousness,” said an investigator.
