At least 33 bodies have been pulled from the water after a bus skidded off the road into a fast-flowing river in northern India.

The crash happened near Kullu, a popular summer resort 250 kilometers north of Shimla, the Himachal Pradesh state capital, according to AFP.

Many more are believed to have died but been washed away, officials have said, as rescuers continue to search for survivors in the submerged vehicle. Fourteen were reported hurt.

Police said it was not immediately clear how many people were on board the bus but that it was possible it was carrying more passengers than its capacity.

Authorities were also looking for the driver of the bus, who reportedly jumped out of the vehicle at the time of the incident, reports BBC.

The crash on Wednesday is the worst reported road accident in India where casualties on the country’s thoroughfares reached 131,834 in 2011, according to the government’s National Crime Records Bureau.
