From around today, December 19, the sun will set perfectly ‘into’ the summit of Mt. Fuji. At least, it will appear to do so if you head to Mt. Takao to watch it.
For the five days which surround the winter solstice, visitors will flock to the mountain in west Tokyo to watch the phenomenon, known as Diamond Fuji, at between 16:00 and 16:30, and then flock back down via an extended cable car service that runs until 18:00.
The event is generally popular with romantics and photographers and, while it may not be quite as spectacular as the sunrise from Fuji-san, the atmosphere and ease of getting home (though you might find the train a bit cramped) is a nice way to enjoy one of Tokyo’s outlying areas.
To get there, take the Keio Line from Shinjuku to Takaosanguchi Station – which takes around 55 minutes (depending on which express service you find).
