South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, making his first visit to Myanmar since the attempted assanissation of his predecessor, successfully urged the country to refrain from military cooperation with North Korea.
The two-day trip included a meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi, who was recently elected into parliament following reforms. President Thein Sein promised Lee that Myanmar would not cooperate with activities that would violate UN Security Council resolutions.
He denied allegations of nuclear cooperation with Pyongyang. Myanmar also agreed on freeing a North Korean refugee who had entered the country illegally. Lee spoke highly of Suu Kyi’s dedication to democracy and the bright future that “Suu Kyi made possible”. The Nobel Peace Prize winner agreed with Lee on the note that “prosperity is no substitute for democratic rights”.
