Beijing police say they want to increase efforts to track down foreigners illegally entering, living or working in the city. A 100-day campaign has been launched urging citizens to report illegal migrants after an alleged rape, although it is unclear whether there is a direct link between the events.

The incident was caught on video and posted on the web which angered viewers. Citizens can cooperate by contacting the phone number posted by the police in case of suspicious individuals.

The nation’s rapid economic growth is attracting an increasing number of foreigners, the rate reaching almost 200,000 new immigrants on any given day, said Beijing Morning Post. Official residence permits and woking permits are issued to foreigners with proper visas. Foreigners who are caught with an illegal status would be fined, detained or deported.
