Legends say that the loud noise of fireworks expels evil spirits. In the west, Dec. 1 is the day to blow the skies out, the Chinese clear the poltergeists out during their calendar-roving New Year’s, and the Japanese typically do it with hanabi during Obon in August, when the spirits of the dead return. But in Tokyo, you can enjoy the New Year tradition in Yokosuka, where there will be a fireworks show over the harbor. Besides the light show, the romantic ocean-side location will host live music, outdoor restaurants that will serve food throughout the evening, and a special Countdown lottery.
