Elements of Ayurveda

I am learning about and experiencing some wonderful ayurveda treatments in Kerala. The climate and abundance of medicinal herbs has seen ayurveda, the sister science to yoga, flourish in this part of India.

Ayurveda means life (ayur) knowledge (veda) and is believed to be over 5,000 years old. Ayurveda teaches that all living and non-living beings are composed of five basic elements: air, ether, water, fire and earth. These elements manifest in the body as three basic subtle energies, or doshas: vata (air/ether), pitta (fire) and kapha (water/earth).

By knowing and living according to your born constitution (prakriti), you are able to maintain balance and wellness of body, mind and spirit.

Om shanti,

Dani
