If you’re looking for logical plot development and depth of characters, 2012 is probably not for you, but if it’s grand-scale special effects and non-stop action you’re after, look no further. Director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow) is back with yet another CGI-heavy apocalyptic thriller, in which he blows up and/or floods nearly every major world city and monument. John Cusack plays the ‘normal’ guy who goes to great lengths to save his family and secure for them passage on one of the ships built to withstand the disaster—tickets for which have been sold for the astronomic price of one billion euros. The story is far-fetched and the ending predictable, but the scenes of destruction are fairly impressive—which, after all, is why we watch films like this anyway.

Now playing.
