Not a Runner but Ready for a Fun Day?

You don’t have to be a runner to be able to participate in this fun day and contribute to the cause.  Walking can be a fun way to make new friends as you walk and enjoy the Palace scenery – enjoy the 5k walk option.

Run for the Cure / Walk for the Life

Now in its sixth year, attracts a crowd of about 1,000 runners, walkers and supporters each year.  In 2008 a total of ¥6.7 million was raised – the funds were used to purchase much-needed mammography equipment that was donated to Japanese hospitals.

The event is a fabulous day out for the family.  Invite friends and co-workers to join the event and help raise awareness and after the run/walk enjoy the atmosphere – there will be lots of entertainment including cheerleaders and gospel singing as well as a variety of delicious food stalls to choose from and great DJ music!  Also you have a chance to win some great prizes at the raffle!

Participants raise money to support a non-profit organisation by collecting donations or pledges for completing a pre-determined course.

Run for the Cure Foundation

Breast cancer in Japan has long been considered a “western problem”, however with alarming growth in the rates of breast cancer among Japanese women, Japan can no longer ignore this global problem. The mission of the Run for the Cure Foundation is to eradicate breast cancer in Japan as a life-threatening disease through education, timely screening and treatment. The generosity of our donors is vital in our sustained efforts to help breast cancer patients today, as well as to invest in the improvement of health for generations to come.

In three years’ time, the Foundation has donated four mammography machines and funded 2,000 mammograms for medically underserved women living in rural areas of Chiba and Osaka. The Foundation has also provided grants to support groups, nursing and midwifery associations, and recently launched PiNK, a magazine written in Japanese and available free-of-charge wherever Japanese women congregate, as well as online.

Sadly, women in Japan are still diagnosed far too late because of inadequate breast health information or access to care. When the Foundation opened its doors three years ago, the risk to a Japanese woman was 1 in 30. Today that risk has increased to 1 in 23. Alarmingly, on average, a Japanese woman dies from breast cancer every 55 minutes; a third of the women diagnosed this year will not survive.
